New Sidewalks
If you’ve been planning to install a new sidewalk or walkway, but don’t know where to begin, we can help you get off to the right start. We’ll assist with any permitting requirements, and work with you to determine the best placement, width, and surface type for your property. Our experienced team will handle any excavation and removal safely and professionally, then level and compact the ground to create a stable subgrade so that your new sidewalk wont heave or resettle over time. We’ll often add a gravel subbase above the ground layer to ensure stability and to help with drainage, before placing wood forms and pouring the concrete. We can add a number of different finish types at this point, including custom colours, stamps, or aggregate to give your sidewalk a unique touch. We wrap up the whole process by curing the concrete, cutting expansion joints, and sealing the sidewalk against the elements.
Resurfacing
If you have an existing sidewalk in need of repairs or restoration, we can help you bring it back to life. We can repair or lift sunken sections, stabilize an eroded subbase, fill cracks, and resurface it to look as good as new. With a variety of finish options, this can be a great chance to give your sidewalk some additional character as well. Get in contact with us, and we’ll be happy to consult with you on the best way to restore or improve your sidewalk.
Finish options
Trowel Finish
After concrete is poured, it is generally smoothed and evened out by hand for a flat, consistent surface. Different hand trowel techniques can be used to give the concrete its final finish at this point, creating an attractive, smooth texture that is easy to maintain. This can be a classic look, with multiple options for patterning. The tradeoff with this finish type is that it can be more slippery than the alternatives.
Broom Finish
The simplest and most economical way to ensure good traction is broom finish. This is accomplished by dragging a stiff broom over the surface of the concrete before it dries, giving the sidewalk a slightly rough texture. Because it is quick and does not require any specialized tools, broom finish is often significantly cheaper than other finish types, and it has the added benefit of giving extra grip to the surface. It is among the most common and popular types of concrete finish.
Exposed Aggregate
If you are looking to improve traction, but also want a more unique texture, a strong option is an exposed aggregate finish. Exposed aggregate is a coarser mix of gravel, stone, and sometimes artificial elements added to the concrete for decorative purposes. Generally, the top layer of the concrete is stripped away to expose this colourful mix more evenly, giving the concrete a rougher surface and a vintage look.
Stamped Concrete
Perhaps the most customizable option of all is stamped concrete, an increasingly popular way of patterning a concrete surface to mimic other materials, or create unique designs. Different colours and dies can be added to the concrete, before stamping it with patterns that can imitate stone, brick, slate, or even wood. Often the results are very realistic, and more affordable than the real alternatives. This is a great way to get an elegant looking sidewalk for your property with fewer maintenance headaches or potential trip hazards.
